Move Tasks using Drag and Drop
Drag and drop functionality can be used to move a task in a project.
- Click the Move icon on the task that you want to move.
- Drop it on the Task you want to move it to. It will be inserted as the first task after that one.
- A dialogue box may appear clarifying the action. Pay close attention to the message in this box and choose the appropriate action. See Adding Child Tasks to Summary Tasks for more information about dragging and dropping with child and summary tasks.
Copy or Move Tasks using Cut and Paste
Cutting and pasting can be used to copy or move tasks within the project. This may be done instead of dragging and dropping if the tasks are in different sections of the project or there are a lot of tasks and its difficult to navigate through all the sections to drag and drop. If summary task is copied or cut and it has child tasks, those tasks will be copied or cut too (and pasted as well).
To select the task to copy or move:
- Hover on the task to copy or move (so the line is highlighted)
- Right click and
- Select Copy to copy the task (leaving the existing task as it is)
- Select Cut to move the task
To select where to move or copy it to:
- Hover on the task to move or copy it to. Note* It will always be inserted after this selected task
- Right click and select Paste
- Depending on what is being copied and pasted, an additional message dialogue box may display. Pay close attention to the message in this box. For more information, see Using Drag and Drop/Cut and Paste to Create Child Tasks in the Adding Child Tasks to Summary Tasks.
Moving a Task to the Top Level of the Hierarchy
If a task is to be created at the top level of the project, drag and drop or cut and paste it to another top level task and ensure NOT to add it as a child. It will be inserted after the currently selected task.
Another option is to hover on the Tools menu option for the project (i.e. that is in the menu options in the same line as the task list header) and select Paste which will create the task as a top level task usually at the bottom of the task list.
Drag and drop or cut and paste can be used again to move it if necessary.
Moving a Task so it is the first task
To insert a task as the first task, it is a two step process.
First, drag and drop or cut and paste this task on the task which is currently first. This will paste this task as the next task right after the first one.
Then drag and drop the first task onto this task. That moves the first task as the task right after this one and this task then becomes the first in the list.
Deleting Tasks
To delete a task, click the Delete icon on the same line as the task.
A prompt will appear confirming the deletion.
If it is a summary task being deleted, you will be prompted to also delete all the child tasks or leave the child tasks. If they are kept, they will be created at the same level in the hierarchy that the summary task was.
