Project Priorities help organizations categorize and rank project work based on importance, urgency, strategic value, or other business criteria. Once configured, priorities can be assigned to projects and used in reports for filtering, grouping, sorting, and executive visibility.
What Are Project Priorities?
Project Priorities are configured through the Project Priorities add-on in Project Insight. Organizations commonly create priority levels such as High, Medium, and Low, but additional priority levels can be created to support specific business processes.
Each priority can include:
- A priority name such as High, Medium, or Low
- A priority code
- A ranking value used for report sorting
- A display order used in selection lists
- A color for visual identification
- A default setting for new projects
How Do I Configure Project Priorities?
After enabling the Project Priorities add-on, navigate to the configuration page where you can create and manage priority levels.

For each priority you can:
- Assign a priority code
- Set a ranking value for report sorting
- Define display order in dropdown lists
- Assign a color
- Select a default priority
Project Priorities can also be enabled for both projects and tasks.
How Should Organizations Use Project Priorities?
Every organization defines priorities differently. Some organizations use priorities to indicate urgency, while others use them to represent strategic importance, customer impact, regulatory requirements, or executive direction.
A common approach is:
- High Priority – Critical projects requiring immediate attention or executive visibility.
- Medium Priority – Important projects that should be actively managed but are not considered urgent.
- Low Priority – Work that can be completed as capacity becomes available.
How Do I Report on Project Priorities?
Project Priorities can be displayed directly in Project Reports using the Priority column.

Reports can be grouped by Priority to summarize projects at each priority level.

Why Report on Project Priorities?
Reporting on project priorities helps organizations understand where resources, budgets, and effort are being invested. Priority reporting can support executive reviews, portfolio planning, resource allocation, and strategic decision-making.
Common questions priority reporting can answer include:
- How many High Priority projects are active?
- Which projects require immediate attention?
- How is work distributed across priority levels?
- Are resources focused on the most important work?
