The following connection error will occur in SQL Server Management Studio when attempting to connect to a SQL Server database on another computer if the TCP/IP protocol is not enabled in the SQL Server Configuration Manager. It is disabled by default in SQL Server 2017.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 64)
Use the SQL Server Configuration Manager to enable the TCP/IP protocol as follows to resolve this problem.
